This award allows women medical students, general surgery residents and cardiothoracic surgery residents enrolled at an accredited institution, with an interest in cardiothoracic surgery, the opportunity to attend the STS Annual Meeting, and to be mentored throughout the meeting by a WTS/STS member. In addition, women postdoctoral candidates in a research or other gap year who have graduated medical school and are interested in cardiothoracic surgery are eligible to apply.
The submission deadline for applications is October 30, 2024, 11:59 p.m. PDT.
We are excited to launch the nomination process for this year’s Extraordinary Women in Cardiothoracic Surgery Award to recognize outstanding women surgeons in our specialty who have achieved excellence in clinical practice and demonstrate integrity, leadership, creativity, and expertise in carrying out day-to-day duties and supporting the specialty.
Nominations must be submitted by Friday, October 25, 2024.

An all-women team has made history at the University of California, San Francisco after performing a heart transplant on a female patient in early December. The five-hour procedure is notable since at UCSF, Fiedler told, they only performed about 50 heart transplants last year, and overall, men make up the majority of adult cardiac surgeons in the country. A 2019 STS Thoracic Surgery Practice and Access Task Force Workforce Report showed that, nationwide, women comprise 6.2% of adult cardiac surgeons.
