Yolonda Colson, MD, director of the Women's Lung Surgery Program in Thoracic Surgery, and Utkan Demirci, PhD, assistant professor of medicine in the Renal Division and the HST-BWH Center for Bioengineering in the Department of Medicine, were individually awarded a $500,000 grant from The Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology (CIMIT). Dr. Colson will use the grant to study treatment using nanotechnology in metastatic breast cancer. Dr. Demirci will be developing technology for monitoring HIV in resource-limited settings such as medical facilities in emerging countries. CIMIT provided this grant as part of their initiative to sponsor 26 Massachusetts research teams in early-stage projects that are focused on blood infections, HIV and breast cancer.
